How to avoid jailbreaking your iPhone

Ok, not sure this post is useful to many, but I feel like sharing.

I have 2 homes on 2 continents so I have 2 mobile lines (Nokia e61i on Orange France, iPhone on SoftBank Japan).

Of course iPhone is iPhone, easier to use, blah blah, but it is locked to SoftBank and it would cost a fortune to use it in data mode in Europe. I could jailbreak it but not really keen on wasting time on this, risking problems at each upgrade and anyway, I always need those 2 phone lines in my pocket.

So, the idea is to turn the Nokia into an internet access point serving the iPhone.

iPhone will use the Nokia as any WiFi router, using Nokia’s internet access to Orange. After all Nokia has best data hardware, so let’s enjoy it for what it does best and let’s leave the rest to iPhone.

Step 1: download JoikuSpot (http://www.joiku.com/index.php?action=products&mode=productDetails&product_id=310&send=success)and install on Nokia (I started with the light version to test first, but then decided to go to Premium at $9 because of e-mail protocols blocked in Light version and there is a huge difference between the 2 versions).

Step 2: On the Nokia customize access point name and get the WEP key from the options. On the iPhone, check your access points, you should find your new WiFi access point. Enter the WEP key, you are done.

Recommendation: go Premium because while in public places any other PCs could use your connection…

Premium’s connection is also faster and has reconnect mode when network is bad (because yes, now you can browse in TGV, in cars, while walking,…).

The new tiny Nokia “router” accommodate other simultaneous connections like my laptop, friends iPhones, etc…

Question to iPhone geeks: What is the equivalent app for iPhone?
